Is the Caro Kann broken?

Whoops.  I didn't pay attention to Black's first move and thought you were talking about the Caro-Kann...

false, dont ever compare the trash french to the godly caro kann

I just did!  Whatcha gonna do about it?

1.e4 c6?! 2.d4 d5 3.f3! 1-0

1.e4 e6! 2.d4 d5 3.Nc3 with play for both sides

1.e4 e6! 2.d4 d5 3.e5 with play for both sides

1.e4 e6! 2.d4 d5 3.Nd2?! =

1.e4 e6! 2.d4 d5 3.exd5?! =

I'm pretty sure the Fantasy variation is not refutation of the Caro Kann. Black only has to worry if he has no past experience or knowledge about it.

Hmmmmm just curious when was the last time the caro Kann was played in an important high level  GM tournament or world championship match?

Havent noticed that either. Did anybody in the recent candidates play it? I remember seeing some games in the french but not the caro Kann.

I think the Caro Kann is still playable, especially for players 1200 - 2000. (My opinion though)
daxypoo
i play the caro kann and it is still popular up to the super mega gm level and plenty of “modern master games” are in database (2300-500)

i suppose if black is going for win they go sicilian and for draw they play another opening at the super top levels; they must have totally different mindset and goals

indeed. As a life-long CK player, I wouldn't go Extreme and play ... Qb6?! right out of the gate😬. Rather, just play slowly but surely as in 3. ... dxe4 (always the consistent ice-breaker in many lines vs White) 4. fxe4 e5. Remember, the idea is always to provoke White into attacking & we parry. The Fantasy Variation or Tartakower's line is a perfect example. As it is, the Caro•Kann has been played by World Champions in Championship matches: Botvinnik, Karpov, Kasparov soo by default CK is and has been certifiably verified as a perfectly viable defence played at all levels... Then, Now and of course in the Future. No doubt

In fact, I equate the French as a Boxer in a defensive "Shell" vs an Aggressive boxer whereas the CK is (to me) a blue belt BJJ practitioner vs an Aggressive Boxer. Hope it's clear what I'm trying to differentiate between the two in Mindset.

++ At the Yekaterinburg Candidates' there were 3 French Defences and a single Caro-Kann.

At the Madrid Candidates' there was only 1...e5 and 1...c5, neither French, nor Caro-Kann.

najdorf96

indeed. Can anyone quote how many times in the past 50 years the Caro-Kann or the French has been played more often in Candidates or WC matches. I know the Answer but wonder if there is something I don't know. Appreciate it 🤙🏼

No worries, I am not an expert, still a beginner, but the Caro-Kann is playable, like nearly every other opening or Opening system. Keep or start playing! :-)

Keep or start playing?

I'll pass and stick with the French.

Facing the Caro-Kann is like having an extremely attractive woman in a hotel room with you!  Full of fantasies (3.f3!!) and lots of success! (1-0)

In recent games between super engines, black held a draw once with the Caro and white won every other game. So does this mean that the Caro Kann is busted or is it still playable?

Engines do not know how to play chess.

In that case, what do you call a player who loses to a player who does not know how to play chess?

A human.
