Is the King's Gambit dead?

Sort:

While I appreciate the wonderful games the King's gambit has generated over the centuries, I am officially declaring the King's Gambit dead. Sealed

I think I can get some example games in king's gambit from my friend who used to play it in his games (ICCF 2450+). Hi lost king's gambit only once during last 10 years (playing White of course :) ).

Oh smack!! Long live the king's gambit. It is by far my highest win % opening as white, which probably says nothing more than the fact that I studied it the most.
jay
So that answers that, the Kings gambit is not dead.

I enjoy playing the King's Gambit more than any opening on the Internet or in blitz chess.  I've written 3 books on the opening and there are still hundreds of King's Gambits being played every year in all kinds of tournaments and published in chess magazines around the world.  It's rare at the GM level, but you still have Spassky playing it, and lesser known GMs such as Morozevich (rate 2762 and ranked #4 in the world), Fedorov, and Gallagher (British GM and former British champion.

It is very much a cultural opening.

In Washington State you hardly see it at all.  In other locations, it is the opening dejour.   In Washington, you see alot more Reti openings.   It is the Yasser phenomena.

wow! i had no idea it was geographical like that. that would be an interesting study - openings by geography as influenced by other people in your club/area...

Well, theorically, at leat, the king's gambit is dead - Shirov made a great part of killing it by an amazing otb game (I dont have the reference here, sorry) and most of the h6! h4? lines are considering to limit white's chances to obtain compensation for the pawn.

I still play it, however, since as for other "refuted" opening, not everyone knows the theory and, thus, can crete sharp games.

show me the king's gambit? is it the f4? :)

Theoretically it is dead. If you play it against a computer, you will get crushed every time. I have a friend who always plays the king's gambit. To this, I play the clever defense that seems dubious at first, but isn't. I'm sure all you KG afficionados know it. 1.e4 e5 2.f4 Qh4+ 3.g3 Qe7 is the "keene defense". I just play it because I don't know the theory that well and don't want to go into a mutual king hunt.

The KG has a lot of drawish lines when played at the top level. For most people it still remains one of the most exciting of openings (as well as one of the oldest known openings). It's my feeling that most people who don't answer e4 with e5 are trying to avoid either the King's Gambit or the Spanish Torture.

I agree with jay i sometimes use king gambit.Sealed

I never play KG as white though I love to play against it!

I challenge Anyone out there who is cosiderally familiar with this line to a KG match where I play black- message me

here's a KG I played against recently, my opponent was rated higher than me though resigned on move 18!

I play the King's Gambit almost exclusivly as white.  I prefer for my opponent to play a Dragon against me, though, as I love the Yugoslav attack.

One of the biggest reasons I dont play 1......e5  isnt the Spanish or kings gambit but the vienna game.....I refuse to study the theory on it and until I do I am likely to continue playing sicilians and the french . If I know my opponent plays kings gambit I often will play 1....e5 .

Batgirl is right, the kings gambit has drawish lines at master level however 3.Bc4 offers alot of scope! someone just needs to popularise it. Not much coverage on this line in books but definatley a variation worth considering if you want to spice up your kings gambit.

KG is very strong in Blitz- and Bullet chess Cool

There is an excellent book by Thomas J devoted to the Bc4-line ("Fantastic King's Gambit"?). Hi previous book: "King's Gambit for the Creative agressor" is a few years old but also very good.

So let me rephrase: The King's Gambit is Deadly Fun!
