Is the King's Gambit dead?

"And if you face 3.Nf3, there's no point defending the pawn at the cost of ruining the kingside pawn structure with ...g5?. "

Yeah. What's to be gained by blindly following those silly main lines?

MapleDanish

The KG is sound if you ask me...

It's just too scary for top level GM's who live and die by their rating these days to play it when Nf3 is just as good.

For those that really believe Fischer's refutation lives up to it's name... yes, he was on to something but as a KG player I can tell you that I LIKE (emphasis on Like!) playing against the 'refutation'.

3. ... g5 is a lot of fun to play against too.

Just keep that in mind when you play the black side of the KG.

When Bobby came up with the "refutation" ...d6, no GM had dared to play the White side of the KG in serious tournaments for many... many... many... years.

I am probably going to botch this translation but...

"I use the King's Gambit frequently with extraordinary success, but many times because my opponents are not prepared.  Some declare it dead, but I will feel like playing games with it.  Thank you."

Wow! You're better than Morphy!

It's not dead. It's just pining for the fjords!

Sorry, couldn't resist. Once a Python fan...

the kings gambit is dead nowadays cause  black now has the weapons to destroy this atacking combination

30 years ago many players were using the kings gambit because blak thought that g5 was not "beautiful" letting white play d4 and control the center but after many games ,today we are sure that white cannot stop easily neither the g5 neitherf4

->sorry for my english :S

so, it seems there's more king's gambiteers that i thought. the kings gambit isn't death, it's just sort of risky but most of us club level players can enjoy its sharp lines. btw most players are always bragging about draws and boring play, well this king's gambit almost always brings excitement to the board, those of you that haven't played already, give it a try, the complications, for both sides arise as if by magic. so, long live the King's Gambit! King's Gambit may be somewhat refuted/drawish at higher levels but I love to play it in blitz.  I also play it often as a response to black's e5 if I'm facing an opponent I'm pretty confident I can beat in the middlegame regardless, just on tactical grounds.  Against better opponents, however, I go for the Ruy Lopez against e5 because I know the theory of it very well.

You have to wonder why the author of "Winning with the Kings Gambit" doesn't play it anymore!(Joe Gallagher)

GM Fedorov has stopped playing it also.Perhaps at their level it doesn't "work"?

Sad!

Stay tuned! New book on the Kings Gambit by Jan Pinski is coming out in April!

I used to play it, it's a ton of fun in blitz! I bought Neil McDonald's book and it was ok...but not great.

Just look at the Grob Opening and how it makes your opponent sweat a puddle on the floor especially if they unaware of it.

By the way, I know absolutely no theory in the Grob or the Orangutan so if I meet either of those OTB I'm completely screwed! Tongue out

The 3. Bc4 line is very double edged.  It is the best response to the KGA and immediately sets problems for Black as how to play the freeing d5.  As a former KG player, I agree that it is not dead, but is not quite as good and as solid as 2. Nf3.
CatoTheElder
Its survived about 500 years with players of very high caliber resorting to it. I wouldn't call it dead. I find it a very good opening if your are looking for a decisive game, as the draw percent in the KG is very low. It also good if you want to avoid a closed game against an opponent. Once they push e5 and you go for f4, they really have little choice but to accept an open game.

I personnally play the King's Gambit A LOT more than the queen's gambit (1 time)

Sacrificing my "f" pawn opens up the rook when 0-0 and opens up both bishops and the queen. The Queen's G. makes me feel like I open up my king waaay too much to attack.
