Is the Scotch Opening a good opening?

Bongcloud is good at ur level
Did you see that 800 game where White played Fool’s Mate and won? played f4 g4 Nf3 Bg2 0-0 e4 and then pretended he hadn’t hung mate, it was hilarious.

Scotch is like the third best opening in that position. That being said, yeah it’s totally fine. Incredibly easy to draw against at GM level but anything but and it’s quite strong and aggressive.

it’s one of the best openings for white at the beginner level imo
but among those is the london according to most of the chess community (GothamChess and his hive mind) so I would take this with a grain of salt

The London is a terrible choice for beginners. Playing the London well requires positional insight such as one only gains playing other Queen’s pawn openings a great deal (usually over several years).
The Scotch, OTOH, thrives on tactics. Tactics are what every beginner, as well as most of the rest of us, should prioritize.

Im not saying the London is good for beginners, quite the opposite. I’m saying people blindly repeat that it’s good because “it’s simple”. I agree with you

The scotch does game does free up your game, the problem is black also opens his game with an easy push to d5, I find the best openings are the ones that make it difficult for black to Plat d5 and open his diagonals for the queen side bishop.

d5 is more of a threat when e5 is also on the board, but in the Scotch, the e5 pawn has been traded. Also I don’t think I’ve ever seen d5 been played early in the Scotch, only d6
Either way, you played d4, so the same lines black would open up with d5, you also opened up. So, the advantage is equal.
Not sure if anybody else looked recently at the game with Anand posted on the first page of this thread, but my take on it is that the problem is white played poorly. 5. Bb5 is not the way to go. Instead, it should be 5. Nxc6, which takes you into the Miles variation. It's sharper and far better for white than the line posted.
Bb5 seemed odd to me as well, so I assumed that it must be some theory.
