Is there a viable Bird out there?

I've never been lucky enough to see even a Master get to use Bird System on this site effectively.  It is such a volatile opening against someone agressive (which I'm not, I just have seen e5 against f4)  Where are some good Bird games, or is it just a reckless opening?

One interesting idea is coupling 1.f4 with 2.b3. I haven't tried it yet, but it seems reasonably promising. It'd probably be more of a surprise weapon than anything else if I decided to use it though. The idea is to control e5 with the f4 pawn and the b2 bishop.

And that quick six-mover sort of rattled me. I guess everyone blunders badly at some point. I hope that person isn't a Bird player. :/

I remember years ago (1990s) a book came out pushing the f4/b3 combo. In all that time, I have seen this once OTB and I won the game with no particular preparation.
