Yes and no. 3. Nh6 was a pretty bad move though. If my oppoent plays 1 h4,followed by 2 Rh3, I kinda know what the game is gonna be like.

There's a difference between something unorthodox and something that is just plain wrong.

i never said it wasnt a bad move, but one bad move does not take away from the value of a game. Even if you are right and this game in question isnt good, you cant tell on the third move what the rest of the game will contain

I always find it odd when I read comments from chess players of my skill level lecturing masters on this game.

Neither you nor I have any idea what an IM can tell from the third move of a game.

I don't know- you may submit the move to the Caissiber chief, FM Stefan Buecker, and it's likely that he will analyse 3...Nh6 seriously, and find some good ideas for black (he is very skilled at that, I can assure you). Heck, he has written a whole book about 1.e4 e6 2.f4 Qf6, so that 3...Nh6 may even look natural to him!

And- he has seriously analysed even weirder moves.

But as far as I'm concerned, the best reply to 3...Nh6 is very natural (4.Nf3), so it will never be missed by white, and the surprise element (which is necessary for playing weird moves) goes away at once.

While christian is rated 1300 him teaching players to not put knights on the edge of the board is fine advice. You cant criticise him for that:) but its not interestning. Its almost playing a piece down

Actually if your opponent is placing his knight on the rim on the third move, it can tell you alot about that player.  Unless if course youre playing Kasaprov and hes taking it easy on you.

it can tell about the nature of the player, yes, but you never know where a game is going to go

Are we playing the same game?

I often know where the game is going and I suck.

its an interesting position to say the least, One of the nuances is deciding whether to take the d5 pawn with your e4 pawn or your c4 Bishop, depending on the position one will be better than the other or they will both be playable, the thing with ex is you get the e file for your rooks specifically your a1 rook. with Bx you are limited in what you can do after Nf6
