Kings Indian Defence

I feel like you are at a disadvantage if you are black using the kings indian defence. Black is closed while white is open and controls the center. Someone tell me why this defence is good.

Black will counter in the center with d6 and e5, together with the Bg7 this gives quite some control over the dark squares. Practical chances are fine.

also if you do it right you create an almost impenitriple wall and also have some pieces left to stage a strong counter attack. i know this cause my best friend did it to me and almost won but i had to sacrifice a ton of pieces in order to win

Kingsindian is a chain strategy opening. White generally has a chain with f3-e4-d5 vs the d6-e5-f4 chain for black.

While it is true that white has more space and perhaps more harmonic development black is attacking the base of the white chain (the logical strategy) that happens to be in front of his king. The attack on the white king is enough/almost enough (strike trough what you want) to compensate the extra white space and the fact that black is kind of burning his bridges behind him.

Black is playing for higher stakes on the kingside while White is generally faster on the queenside, making it double edged but not without practical chances for Black.

The following could be considered the main line of the entire King's Indian Defense- do you want to have this position for black?

1. d4 Nf6 2. c4 g6 3. Nc3 Bg7 4. e4 d6 5. Nf3 0-0 6. Be2 e5 7. 0-0 Nc6 8. d5 Ne7 9. Ne1 Nd7 10. Be3 f5 11. f3 f4 12. Bf2

White achieves much more queenside space and the possibility of breaking the queenside open with a quick c5. Additionally, his knight on e1 could move to d3 and enter into the queenside, while the c3 knight can often go to b5. With a rook coming to c1, white has very strong play.

In return, black achieves an enormous kingside attack. He has thrown his f-pawn down the board and is now ready to do the same with his g-pawn. He will often lift rooks, sacrifice either his c8-bishop or a knight, and go all-out for checkmate on white's king. This is an extremely aggressive approach for black. Aggressive players who love to attack the king often play the K.I.D. Hikaru Nakamura is the best example. He plays the K.I.D. almost any time he needs to win as black.
