After finally deciding on making an opening repertoire...what software out there is the least expensive so that I can stop using a written notebook ?  Is that something I can do on chess.com?

You can do it here. You can also get lucas chess. It's free and simple. You have your repertoires and you have options to train your openings.

I feel a bit strange drilling openings using opening book training software. Ideally I should remember what's important naturally and what I try to commit it to memory. Admittedly I always seem to have to brute force things a bit by repeating lines many times.

Are there any accounts of top players using software to specifically train or manage their openings aside from making and adding notes to variations?
