Well, c4 doesn't really sac a pawn... so you could still play for an open game without making any major concessions apart from the IQP.

LOL sees to me that you have never played and exchange French then. Apart from the exchange variation there are quite a few gambits that give life to white's play.

Uhm, in any other opening you can get an open game without risking a pawn and the exchange variation is really not that great if you're fighting for an advantage. I mean compare it to the caro-kann which is extremely solid but you can still force an open game with the panov attack and the only consession is the IQP and not a whole pawn sac. This is why so many e4 players hate the french while they do not have any problems facing all the other defenses.

So play the Exchange French and then push c4. You'll get a similar IQP position to the Panov. Not exactly the same, but it's not a gambit, and it's an open game with a less balanced pawn structure than in the quieter Exchange French lines.

I hate sicilian

Fromper! I'm disappointed in you, LOL!

Who would play it if it's not a gambit???

GambitKing, what do you have against the poor pawns? Laughing

ElectricEel

I suppose there are several distinct viewpoints (on the subject of pawns), two of which are particularly drastic:

1. Cannon fodder, to be thrown to the lions - good riddance

2. The 'Soul' of chess (and the pieces are 'only' their followers).

It's very inferior compared to the panov-botvinnik attack which is why it is rarely played.

CCBTheDestroyer

I HATE playing black against 1. NF3... Gambitking do you have any good gambits against this?

CCBTheDestroyer

Thanks gambit king.

transience

As a dynamic English player, I dislike most variations of the Symmetrical, which are rather tame in comparison to the Reversed Sicilian, the Grand Prix Attack Reversed or the Keres Attack.

Playing with the black pieces, I loathe Closed Sicilians.

You're welcome! But be warned--a lot those ideas are untested, and in their infancy... so you REALLY have an opportunity to surprise some players!

exactly what I like!!!!!!

ElectricEel

Futuregm23, I would just play 1.c5 in response to Nf3 if you don't mind playing a Sicilian (which it often transposes into).

IWillBlunderAlways

Giuoco piano, and KID, they seem just so slow

leightonnicholls

I don't really try openings, but I am not good at this one, I have played a few games with it >>>> (This is my worst opening!)

Cant stand the pirc

ElectricEel

Haha, King David's Opening. Here's another one of those that just has to be a critical line:

Look's to be the chess equivalent of parkour...

Maria_Mihai

Maria_Mihai

i like playing c4, but i hate playing against it

Gerik

I dislike the four knights. I can never come up with a proper plan.

ElectricEel

It's the chess equivalent of saying: 'my King has a death wish. Come and get me.'
