Let's Find A Move For Black in the Accelerated Dragon After 8.Bc4!

I would like to discuss the following position in the accelerated dragon:

As a beginning player I have considered the following moves here as best as I can but I have found them all to seem a bit lacking in my view.

Let's start with 8...d6. This move must be fine. Black has done nothing wrong. But this can lead to the Yugoslav attack so I passed it up. However I did consider playing 8...d6 if only to consider just playing against this one line of the Yugoslav attack using Pfren's suggestion of Topalov's ...Nxd4 and ...b5 plan after 8...d6 9.f3 Bd7 10.O-O-O Nxd4 11.Bxd4 b5.

Then there's 8...a5. I don't really like this move because it gets rid of Black's usual counterplay with ...a6 and ...b5 and with this gone it seems hard for me to find a good continuation for Black. So I wasn't surprised at all when I found that the move 9.O-O is quite good here and the resulting positions seem just difficult to me.

8...Qa5 is a move I really don't like. White just plays 9.O-O and now what is the queen doing on a5 in the dragon? I don't really know.

So then we get the at least interesting-looking 8...Re8. I like it because of this interesting gambit idea that has been played by Gelfand twice:

But as interesting as this is, White again is not forced to cooperate and after 9.O-O Black has played 8...Re8 in the dragon which may be even less useful than 8...Qa5.

The last move is 8...Ng4 but I don't like it much either.

So I really don't feel like I like any of the moves in this position. 8...d6 is the move I'm leaning on but I'd rather not play into the Yugoslav attack. Any ideas?

8...d6 might be the best but U could also play 8...a6 (instead of 8...a5 that U dislike). This move was not often played in this position but it seems to be okay too. peshka.png

a5 is my choice. I have a pretty good otb record with that move.

Ng4 Qxg4 Nxd4 and Bxd4 or Qd1

I think d6 is best because your LS bishop is currently useless. Must develop. You could go b6, also allowing LSB out, but rook is unprotected.

H6 perhaps?
