im studying the italian game from blacks side to learn it well. one line that i was recommended is this one

the analysis stops after Na5 but if im not wrong cant white just check on a4? then black must move knight back to not lose it and white queen can go back to b3 for a repetition? im sure this is good stuff for a gm who wants a draw to win a tournament but i dont want players half my rating throw this stuff at me. any suggestions?

What´s wrong with 11... c6? Queen defends the knight on a5 and if white takes on d5, queen can retake. And yes, okay, your knight is not very well placed, also his queen isn´t. And you have a bishop and an attack against the isolani d-pawn. I don´t dislike black position here.

after 3...Bc5 you'd be lucky if white doesn't play 4. b4 (the amazing evan's gambit).

After 10.Qb3, your best bet is probably 10...Nce7 and you avoid this repetition. However, further back, 7...Nxe4 is probably a better line, or least more exciting! Smile

Yeah, the Evans Gambit is a pain.

I had pretty good luck with the Two Knights Defense. If white plays Ng5, the Fritz variation is enjoyable.

@draconlord: This looks very interesting! What does black play next after 7.0-0?

thats a cool variation. personally i used to play this

the nice thing about the variation is that an unprepared opponent is extremely unlikely to find the correct move for white which is 6.Bf1!
but i have found out i prefer the italian game because its easier to play by understanding. i would have put more work into the two knights defence if i hadnt been able to play it so rare. everytime i face it its so long ago i have trouble remembering moves. i also like to play against the evans gambit so no problem for me. defending against it is a rough ride but i have done some studying and when i survive im a pawn up

A tad bit quirky, but alltogether fascinating variation of the Italian Game is the Bird's Attack.
Tigergutt, I steer clear of playing the Italian Game as white in order to avoid the Two Knights Defense, and it's somewhat sad that I don't have the guts to play the Two Knights myself.

It looks that the White could pretty much force a repetition here, or be better after 11. ...c6. You probably wouldn't want to enter the line if you have to win as Black then.

10. ...Nce7 avoids it while giving the White only a small advantage.

Kolems->Thing is, my rating isn't all that high, so I don't often get to play the main line(normally, the game is decided by the mid-game, unless I flat-out win material in the opening, which also happens ).

After 7.0-0, h6 is the boring continuation.

However, I did some googling, and apparently a more exciting Fritz variation would be instead of 6...Nf5, 6.c3 b5! would make the game very interesting, to say the least.

How about 1. e4 e5 2. f4 exf4 3. Nf3?

If you're lucky, you might even get a game like this:

The OP was looking for an opening as black...
