Hmm, it seems that only premium members are allowed to great groups here on chess.com. Would any premium members want to do this for us?

chessmaster102

Please PlayDane would you do us the honor of creating a group

Da-Novelty

When all is ready, let me know. I am dying to start analysing najdorf.

chessmaster102

can you make a group for us then like post #21 asks for.

Playdane

Sorry for the wait.

I've made a group:

Opening study & practice group

You can join, when you want.

We should be clear about some things:

1. What openings should we study?

It's clear that we don't all play the same openings, so how can "the group" make up for this?

2. How should we study openings?

How do we study the theory (learning lines & ideas) and back it up by playing against each other? The last part is easy if we can agree on clock time as well as the time of the day. But the first part is more challenging.

3. When have we "finished" an opening?

I think we need to agree on when we've finished something in order to proceed to the next opening.

4. How much time can we each devote to this every week?

This varies for us all. I can play about 4 hours every week.

1. Since we all play different openings, I think we should create some sub forums withint the group. In the forums, we can plan when to prepare/play training games, post the trainign games, and discuss the opening in general.

2. I don't know about everyone else, but since I really don't have a repertoire, I'll literally learn anything you guys play. You can pick the lines you want to study more in depth, and I'll follow along and offer suggestions and ideas.

3. I don't think we can ever "finish" an opening. If we feel like we've studied a certain line pretty deeply, we can switch to another opening. We can study otehr lines in the first opening later.

4. For me, the amount of time is going to vary. I will be able to spend anywhere from 1-5 hours a day. I'm also a college student so a lot of it depends on homework/exams/projects. I will let everyone know when I have a very time consuming project/exam coming up and when I will not be able to go on for some time.

I will do the same as #4 (Im in highschool)

we should start by limiting each opening discussion to at least 2hrs or less just to start discussing things like. Pawn structure,Forcing lines, refrence games etc...

Playdane

To those in the study group; let's move our discussion to the group forum please.

Can I join? I'm 1898 FIDE rated. I play 1.d4 and with black against 1.e4 I have a good understanding of all the lines of the Caro Kann that white can try. Also, against 1. d4 I've been trying the Gruenfeld
