I play against the sicilian so much and hate going into lines people know better than me.What are some counters to the sicilian that can lead to nontheoretical positions or just something fun to play?

1. stop trying

2. cri

IHaveTHEChessSkill

Never play 2.a3

TheMoistOstrich

Someone said never play a3 but the delayed wing gambit is a good gambit imo that gives you the initiative and a strong center.
1. Alapin
2. b3
3. Closed Sicillian
4. a3
Just play them and see which one you like best. happy.png

wk_18

delayed alapin or maroczy bind

ShamusMcFlannigan

Play the open sicilian but specialize in the more positional lines.  Pick lines that are sound but not as critical, so they have less theory.  Black usually doesn't put as much time/effort into these lines as well so you often have a practical advantage.  Eventually if you wanted to switch over to something more critical against a specific line in the sicilian, you could do so without messing up the rest of your repertoire.

a3 g6 = and White is the one needing to be precise to stay equal

Open Sicilian is the only objective test of the main Sicilians (The Rossolimo is a good test as well, it's just that you can't force Black to allow it)

IHaveTHEChessSkill

a3 = bad

wasting tempos

I like the idea of the Keres (2.ne2), which forces some degree of initiative from black... Very similarly off-putting to many Sicilian players is 2.be2, with similar ideas. Then again, as it was previously said, the main challenge to the sicilian comes from playing open variations of it.

Effective in Blitz and low-rating games but not so much among strong players with decently long TCs.
