While it looks passive in the beginning, I have found the middle game to be very quick in most games since it's a very trade happy set up.  That set up also is against passive players. You're not playing it right then, the entire premise of the opening is to launch a huge kingside attack with f4 + g4 to land some sort of Qh5 mate threats, if you trade all your pieces off then that won't be possible

I think 1.e4 has aggressive lines if you want but also allows for pretty safe play. I personally play the Italian.
