Modern Scandinavian Defense

What are your thoughts on the Modern Scandinavian? I've been watching chess videos on YouTube and one user known a Kingscrusher went into some lines that look scary as hell and if White isn't careful they're in for a world of hurt. Does the Modern Scandinavian scare you?

My thought is that's not scary at all (neither Old nor Modern Scandinavian), especially for white. happy.pngpeshka.png

Please post the scariest variation here and we'll analyze it. wink.png

That video just presents a cheap trick, and the author "GM TheChessPuzzler" is certainly very far from being an actual GM. The move he suggests (4...Nb4) is just rubbish after 5.a3.

Kingscrusher is a fairly decent English/ Cypriot FM, and has no relation at all with that stupid video.

I don't know why I typed in Kingscrusher when I meant chesspuzzler. Well there will be someone out there not familiar with the opening who very well could fall for those tricks.

 OK, point taken.

You are right to assume that this line is scary.

For Black, that is.

Stefan Bücker et al found no refutation of it in the Kiel Trap: 1.e4 d5 2.exd5 Nf6 3.d4 Nxd5 4.c4 Nb4 thread on ChessPub.

Indeed, Stefan did not find a forced checkmate... but he did claim that 5.a3 Na6 6.Nf3 g6 7.Nc3 Bg7 8.Be2 is plus over minus- not?

Not in those very words. His conclusion, AFAICS was

"The odds to hold the draw are not too bad. Yet obviously the resulting position isn't the outcome we've been dreaming of."

So in effect perhaps yes.

Yes, I can agree that black just scared itself with this 4...Nb4?! Even Mokele Mbembe variation in the Alekhine defense looks better than this one. tongue.pnggrin.png

Position seems equal to me anyway, unless I'm completely missing something.

Looks like a blitz dream (the good kind) and a classical nightmare for black.

Anyway position should be equal with correct play.

To answer your question, no, the modern Scandinavian doesn't scare me. And the ...Nb4 line shouldn't scare you as well.
