If you compare the accelerated to the dragon proper you see that black has not spent a move playing d6, instead he uses that tempo to develop.  In some lines this means that black can play d5 in a single move.

If the player intends to play yugoslav style against the accelerated as if it were the normal dragon, then he needs to be careful with his move orders as there are some tricks for black.

One tricky line for black is 1.e4 c5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. d4 cxd4 4. Nxd4 g6 5. Nc3 (c4 leads to the Marcozy bind, which aims for a space advantage and restricting black's freeing pawn breaks.)  Bg7 6. Be3 Nf6 7. Bc4  Qa5

Here if white plays anything but 8. 0-0 he could have some problems.  But white often doesn't know this.

My coach adviced me against playing it. Possibly because it is hard work to tame a dragon?!

Sure but consider class players number 1 and 2.  In practical play which player will have the better of the Marcozy?  Not many amateurs can withstand a passive, fortress like defense for long meanwhile white's play is easy to find.  I think such a difference counts for a lot in lower level games even if the cutting edge theory says it's perfectly equal.

Oops, I was thinking of the hedgehog... still I was under the impression that white's play in the bind was easy to find while black had to be accurate to avoid a big edge to white.

how difficult the positions of maroczy bind becomes depends really on how both sides play it.

A very simple approach for black which is very easy to remember would be the following system which can be played almost regardless what white does and certain accuracy is needed for white as well. Otherwise black can just force the b7-b5 break and have a better position in many cases.

Interesting.  I didn't know this line obviously, thanks for posting.
