never do this

I've not done it in all my 63 years and probably won't do it in my 64th either. I don't like playing my queen early. Generally she has better things to do later on as the game matures.

never do this:
Damnit I was just about to post this "matrix" garbage as an example of what not to do but you beat me to it!!

Well, 1.e4 e5 2.Qh5?! Nf6! gives black enough compensation for the pawn, if not more than enough, according to FM Monokroussos. That is what I will try if someone ever plays this against me.

Losing the pawn with 2...Nf6 seems fairly week to me
It is actually a very good gambit. After 3.Qxe5 Be7 black is ready to castle and will gain more time on the Queen with Nc6, meanwhile white only has his queen out and it will likely move a couple more times in the opening.

I also knew about that move 2... Nf6!? and it's a fairly reasonable idea but I have a feeling that white should be able to get an edge or in worst case equalize (tells from experience with many similar gambits) in that line with best play. But the line gives you very good practical chances and most 2. Qh5!? players are most likely beginners so it's quite a good shot.
Well, 2...Nf6 is a psychological shot as well. Unless white is a beginner, with 2.Qh5 he is basically saying " I don't think much of you as a chess player, so I will beat you with this beginnerish queen move" and with 2...Nf6 black is replying "I think even less of you, therefore I will even give you a pawn and still crush you with the initiative that I get for it!" At least that is how I think of this line ahhaaha.
