Hi, i feel less confident with black openings. So far i have been playing without any coaching or external help. Now i want to improve my game and have begun to study games n openings. as i mostly am bad with opening with black. i went through Nimzo Indian Defense, Kings Indian Defense, and Grunfeld Defense. Which one do you guys think is a safer bet to keep the position equal till the middlegame?? Personally i liked Grunfeld Defense.

I am ready for hard work n to explore . Just taking feedback on which one to start with .. I liked Grunfeld as there's some aggression by black and find it bit more tactical. Seeking opinion from the seniors

KID is most risky, Nimzo is the safest bet, Grunfeld is a good middle ground.

I prefer the Grunfeld, after understanding a few key ideas, it’s becomes very versatile; it can be played against the English and London as well.

You can also transpose to the KID, in rare lines that may be preferable.

What i dislike about Nimzo is exchanging the bishop to double up the pawn because as white i prefer to have one extra pawn in centre

There are ways to play the Nimzo where you don’t exchange the bishop for the knight

In the Taimanov for example, you can play something like this and still get a decent position without ever having exchanged the bishop.

When studying openings, study the one thats more popular and has more videos on it. For example, it's probably not great to learn an opening like the kings gambit, because there's not a lot of resources to learn it. Probably the kings indian would be best out of those, as there's a lot of videos on it. For example i tried to learn the nimzo, but there weren't many videos on it and they didnt mention a lot of the lines. Honestly d5 wouldn't be bad to learn either, especially if ur a d4 player.
