French is good, scandinavian is realy simple
OK almost done completing my repertoire
can you give me things on the french ?? i dont like the scandinavian because i dont like eposing my queen early.
You don't have to immediately recapture with the queen in the Scandinavian - in fact, the Game Explorer gives 1. e4 d5 2. exd5 Nf6 as an equal or better continuation (by win % for black), but it probably has a bit more theory.
Most of the popular Black defences to e4 have a LOT of theory, unfortunately (Lopez, Sicilian, etc.) but you can try the Philidor Defence to avoid Lopez lines (1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 d6), and the French probably has less theory too if you're looking for a simple one (1. e4 e6 with 4 main lines to know).
I get most of my opening info from www.eudesign.com/chessops
in my opinion, Sicillian and 1....e5 is the best defense for 1.e4...
i dont like the Sicilian before but since i have found out that is it very good for counterplay, i used it much now...
The Sicilian is always great, but the French is my favorite response. The Petroff's defence is pretty interesting, but requires a bit of knowledge and theory.
zzega1126> i just need the best defence 1 e4 as black.
If you're playing the Semi-Slav against d4, then either the Caro-Kann or ...Qa5 Scandinavian are going to be the most complementary.
This is funny. The Semi-Slav probably has the deepest, sharpest theory of all defences to 1.d4 (the Meran _and_ the Botvinnik, wow. Or did you pick the Moscow?).
But then you talk about learning the Slav, not the Semi-Slav. So which one is it?
Play the French if you want but know that the ideas are unbelievably complex. If you are just starting out then most would recommend e5 despite the amount of theory to get your open game education..
don't force it i say.
try looking at openings in your spare time, if you think you like the sicilian then play the sicilian for a week, if you like the french then play the french. if you like the spanish or itialian then play e5 for a while, you can try playing games with different openings at the same time or you can try one opening only for a while and then another.
i don't think you will like this advice, but i like this way alot, i settled on the french opening after a long time that i got to know many openings a bit better (even though i was a weaker player back then, and didn't understand many things and had to look back on several openings in order to understand them).

i meant semi slav. in my personal opinion that doesn't have a TON of theory. i mean when i play it i try to get my hemmed bishop out with tempo and try to defend the e5 square. doing this i usually get a decent game.
''memorized practically every line you could do.''
The question now is... do you understand what the heck your even playing????
OK almost done completing my repertoire i just need the best defence 1 e4 as black. i dont want it to have a ton of theory. and if you were wondering as a defence to 1 d4 i chose the semi slav and memorized practically every line you could do. i found the slav a lot easier to learn than the Sicilian. well now im rambling so any suggestions???
