Opening for black

Hi, I used to play e5 as counter for e4 as black, but I started to think maybe there is better option. I'm thinking about sicilian, Scandinavian or something. Is it better than classical King's pawn? I'm 750 elo

You can't really say one is better or the other. I guess you could say Scandinavian is a little worse than them.

If you decide to play Sicillian, prepare for "I will play Italian no matter what" Bowdler attack.

But again, trying to decide whether an opening is better than the other in move two is a fools journey especially when we talk about the two most respected answers to e4.

If you go for Scandinavian, do not ever check the King after you take on d5. Its an absolute waste of a tempo. I prefer Qa5 the main line. You should look into ideas more than memorisation of lines. Such as when to move the c pawn to potential retreat the queen, opposide side castling, etc.

You can also try French or Caro Kann.

Play whatever you want, don't go memorising 10s of moves. Learn ideas, learn when to use them, learn when not to.

Clsssical kings pawn is good, Sicilian is good as well. I wouldn’t recommend playing Scandinavian because you would need to bring your queen out early which you generally should not do. Just try to develop the pieces and control the center!

If you learn the theory of sicilian then it’s one of the best openings against whites e4. Especially najdorf variation which involves heavy theory. But since you are 750 you can try scandinavian defense, just learn how to deal with tennison gambit and other cheap tricks
