A straight forward repatoire with common themes on both sides of the board is:
Kings Indian Attack as white, Kings Indian Defense as black against everything except 1. e4... Sicilian Defense, Accelerated Dragon, against 1. e4.
All feature a Kingside fianchetto and can have similar pawn structures (depending on your sub variations) and plans. It limits the number of openings you need to study and is sound. If it suits your style or preferences is another question but it should work to get you to Expert, if your other skills are adequate.
I am an intermediate chess player who has never really deeply studied openings. I would like to start learning openings and would be grateful if anyone would like to share any of their favorite openings for white or black. Thanks.
