Opening Madness

I don't even know where to begin. I just played a game 30 in which I came in second. My opponent had the white pieces and I must say presented a completely unorthodox opening. I, to the best of my ability and judgement, answered his threats with my opening knowledge (central pawn(s), knights, bishops, castle, move the lady/activate the rooks etc.). I was, however, beaten. I am new and don't know how to post my specific game here but I did find one in Games Explorer that very closely mimicked mine.

If anyone cares to, please inform me of how you take on the challenge of playing a, excuse me, crazy person. And please don't say something like, "tactics" or something. Look at this game. There has to be some concrete way shutting this crap down from the beginning. I am frustrated because I lost and feel foolish. However, is it possible that maybe the whole modern, or classical for that matter, theories on opening are not so concretely sound UNLESS your opponent plays that way also?

Amusing game.

Develop normally, don't try to punish him. With normal play you should have an advantage in the middle game.

Oh, did I mention, DON'T try to punish him

It is similar to the Hippopotamus setup by White. From the game you have pointed out, black's play was actually not so great with some obvious mistakes like h5, etc. But the play went on well because the pieces got exchanged at the right time. The tempo was picked up by black nicely towards the end game.
