King's pawn forward 2 squares because it does those things and occupies the center.

Well King's pawn forward one square is very good, sometimes better than two.

i.e., do this as black as a response to 1.e4 from white? Yeah, that's the French defence and it is good.

As white, king's pawn forward one square is definitely not "very good". It's dubious at best.

But Kings pawn forward one square as white can still be good.

White can still win even if he does this, yes. But that's not the point.

The point is: there are at least 5 other moves that white could make which are better. Why would white do something worse, when he knows he could do something better instead?

d4 is my personal favorite.  I like the long enduring initiative as the result of the opening.

Not 5 moves but I'd say 3 moves.

1.c4, d4, e4, f4, and Nf3 are all better than 1.e3.

You don't have to believe me if you don't want to, but how about this:

"1.e4 is best by test" - - Bobby Fischer

Queen's pawn forward 2 squares and king's pawn forward 2 squares are "the only first moves white should ever consider" -- Wilhelm Steinitz (World Chess Champion 1886-1894)

I'm not making this stuff up. I'm not just giving my opinion. I'm only repeating what the greatest chess players in the world have said.

neurionb has it right, by the way.

Against d4 the only moves I would play are e6 or d5. Nf3 would be the worst move you could possible make.

Not really. In response to 1.d4 from white, 1...Nf3 is the beginning of many very good defences for black. Here's a game where Fischer plays 1...Nf3 as black - and wins the game in 21 moves!

Reviewing the suggestions kings pawn 2 spaces or queen pawn 2 spaces are the best

"Because it develops the queen" has to be one of the lamest reasons to play 1. e4.

i have my reasons it has to do with my strategy

I assume you guys mean 1...Nf6 for black? And yes really theres no debate. e4 is much much better than e3, there's no grounds to argue otherwise, and Nf6 is fine, maybe more popular than d5 Im not sure, but certainly more popular than e6. Where did you get the ridiculous idea that Nf6 is the worst response to d4??

??

I'm assuming it's a list of consecutive moves by white, and not a list of paired moves, else, you'll be playing with a pegasus instead of a knight, and you'ld be capturing an invisible piece (because of the X in your notation).

1. ... Nf6 is a great defense -indian family-

Although, 1. ... f4, the dutch, can give black a considerable initiative, and stonewall vs stonewall can get pretty dark... depending on my opponent moves, i think i would tend to play a K.I.D. plan (for a 1. ... Nf6, well, if Rich approves...)

I want to move queens pawn forward first.

goldendog

Keeping in the fine tradition of bad moves recommended with gusto, a4 and h4 followed by getting the rooks out immediately, then sacrificing the d-pawn and triple the queen and rooks on the open file!!!!!!!!!!!

Excuse me. Now I have to go make up a fide rating to plug into my bio. I hope

I was able to screw up some beginners who took my idiotic advice.

1. e3 has its merits.
