Opening Prep: How much is too much?

I have been studying chess for 2 years now and I must say that I have had a bit of a struggle finding study that stuck with me. I've found quite a bit of amusement in opening study and the forming of my own theory. However, I have struggled quite a bit in finding my way through middlegame and endgame theory. Chesstempo is the only real study that I've kept with but my rating has bottomed out, it seems. I've taken it rather hard that my score only goes down and never seems to improve. Have I taken my opening prep too far? How should I improve my study. I've considered buying that book by Solits on improving your chess study but, luck for me, your wisdom is free! All help is appreciated! Thanks!

STOP STUDYING.

Play seriously. Then analyze your lost games using your brain, and figure out why that happened.

Chess is a skill, directed practice is way more important than study.

And of course, opening prep does nothing for your playing strength. It's fun for some, but that's it.

I agree with kwaloffer.  Just pick one opening, and play a bunch of games with it and have fun.  If you decide you don't like it or get bored, then pick a new one.

I think at our level its all about experience and tactics.

If you enjoy it then there is no such thing as too much.  Personally, I enjoy studying openings, but not memorizing them which is way I play mostly cc.  Most Masters say you should spend a 1/3 of your time on openings.
