Opening Question

What is the best response when I open with e4 and someone replies with d5?

Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks!

Just take the pawn, exd5. If he takes back with the queen, Nc3 to chase the queen.

You should always take the pawn. I've never heard anyone disagree.

The Scandinavian Defence (which is also known as the Centre Counter Defence) is actually a very simple opening to learn the basics of. For a start, you always play exd5. Then black has two options- Qxd5, or Nf6. Nf6 is a much rarer line than Qxd5, so that's what I'll talk about in this post which I've now decided will be sort-of like a miniature article.

So, your opponent has played Qxd5. We arrive at the position below:

First and foremost, 3. d4 is an error. Black responds 3... e5 and you're at a disadvantage after dxe5 Qxd1+ Kxd1. The correct response is 3. Nc3.

Wouldn't you know it, just one move later we hit another crossroad! Qa5 is the mainline. Other tries are Qd8, which is utter trash (trust me! Smile) and Qd6, which is probably slightly inferior but certainly not bad- chess.com has a pair of videos on it, here:

Black has played Qa5, allowing his queen to maintain some control over the board and put pressure on some of your pieces. Now is the correct time to push 4. d4
After we have reached this position, such a common one in the Scandinavian, normal development should ensue, but there can be complications. Here is a typical line:
I hope you enjoyed your miniature guide on the Scandinavian! Wink

Thanks so much for taking the time to help out. It is appreciated.

1.e4 d5 2.d4 dxe4 3.f3 exf3 4.Nxf3
is quite tasty for White & will throw Black out of book early.

To SteveCollyer:

That is if black follows along and takes the pawns. I have never taken the f-pawn. Masters say it looks complicated, so they either develop or even play e3 after white plays f3.

Basically 2. d4 transposes to the Blackmar Diemar Gambit. Eric Schiller wrote a nice article not too long ago on the move 3...e5

SteveCollyer: White doesn't really have much of an advantage. He has a good lead in development and control of the center, but his kingside is open and he's down a pawn.
