Thinking of buying the pro version of Chess Openings Wizard formerly called Book up, to improve my opening skills.

Has anyone had experience of using this software and is it actually worth $197. Thankyou all for your relies.

Sounds way too expensive.

I use it, and it is definitely worth it.

Check out Chess Position Trainer.  The basic software is free.

Also Lucas Chess.

Thanks cdowis will take a look at those, and thanks to everyone else who responded.

Bookup

The iPad version of Chess Openings Wizard just started beta testing.

sounds too expensive. I would rather get a good opening book where all plans are explained.

Are you sure that the problem with your play is the opening?

A sample game you have lost:

  • Here you blunder a whole piece under no real pressure (8...Bd6??) and the opponent kindly declines the gift.
  • This should be rather forgivable under a quick time control, but 3 days per move?

Chess Openings Wizard is too expensive for most people. Some use the free version and only purchase the good opening books where all the plans are explained. Those are around $17 and so much easier to study in COW than on paper.
