Opening up 1.d4

How (as black) do you best work for an open, tactical, exciting game after 1.d4

Simple question complex answer of course, but i'm just looking for a couple of lines and general advice rather than books of theory to absorb.

For background, I'm a kings gambit player any time i get a chance as white and that's the type of game i like.

Oh and incase you can't be bothered looking at my profile I'm 16-1700 here at chess.com, have no proper OTB experience and an interest in what i see as dynamic, attacking, romantic, fun chess.

So I'd rather be crucified trying an exciting novelty than aim to grind out draws etc.

Hope that helps someone point me in the right direction.

Biarien

Perhaps 1. d4 d5 2. c4 e5 ?

Hmm well you could try the king's indian defence though the batyonnet attack is a pain. The benko gambit can be pretty sharp but there are lines where black tries to win with queenside activity. THe budapest gambit is surprising quite dull for black because the most popular line, I believe leads to a position that is just slightly better for white. I would maybe try the semi-slav, it seems pretty passive locking in the light squared bishop instead of the traditionaly slav dxc4. The point of the semi-slav is to play dxc4 after whites kingside bishop has moved

feyterman

personally i go for the slav exchange which gets u a pawn for poor development, but in OTB games i always play the gruenfeld

feyterman

but yea i really dont like facing or palying d4 as i find at most levels its really drawish and its hard for black to start anything. oh and its only recently that i have started playing the Grunfeld but havent lost yet and in my most recent OTB tourny for my club i got 6.5 out 7 with a score of 2.5/3 using the grunfeld

d4 is not boring! look at the meran and the rubinstein attack!

Jolok

I think the right opening for you is the tarrasch defense, it's very sound, it gives you good piece activity at the cost of an isolated queens pawn, and it's harder to avoid then most black tries (I play the slav.  bloody exchange variation...)

look up d4 openings in the database, they draw around 40% of time while e4 only 30% ( dont quote me on these figures, i just averaged a few main lines from each

Frenzal

I haven't looked at any averages or done any research but I'll vouch for 1.d4 being boring.

Atleast what i call boring.

And at 24 I'm an official member of the old man stuck in a groove club, so yeah, pretty boring.

Benko Gambit!

Blumenfeld Countergambit!

If W wants to play solidly like colle, london etc and avoids tactical complications it is very hard for the second player to break the position open without taking risks or giving up some positional considerations in return.

Nevertheless, if you are looking for some main lines why not try one of these

1) grunfeld

2) dutch

3) tarrasch defence

4) benoni

5) benko

6) king indian (KID)

7) slavs

Of course, white can play the exchange variation for 6 and 7 and you end up in some more positional/endgame lines. The more popular lines are the dutch and KID for the tactical players because you are aiming for the White king.

The benoni is also quite good because it is complex the Bishop at g7 is not blocked by its own pawn thus can generate play.

Or you can try the

8) englund gambit which challenges White's center pawns immediately.

P.S

I think everyone who plays 1.d4 needs to stop thinking about chess for a while, eat some psychadelics, get over winning and have freaky sex with their choice of partner, random or prostitute.

If that still hasn't fixed it, I conceed and recommend you look up accountancy as a hobby.

... Thats a bit inappropriate... if you find d4 boring just because it is more of a positional opening then you might as well give up chess. sure its great to have the thrill of a huge sacrifice that ends in a 50 move forced mate but thats not always going to be availible. There are always going to be times where an attack on the king is not posible because either there would be a strong counter in the center or the position just doesnt support your ideas of attacking. Chess shouuld be a mix of both positional and tactical. The Queen's gambit is an old opening which has been played by almost if not all the world champions atleast one time in their careers. IN the Alekhine-Capablanca match it came up 32out of 34(or was it 33 out of 34 or am i think about pitsburg or something?)an opening is not boring because there is no immediate tactical battle it is boring if it is a forced draw every time it is played(I dont think there is yet such an opening but the d4 variation of the peeeeeeetroff is coming close) If you get the timing right in the Queen's Gambit you will get alot of crushing wins. The Queen's gambit is an opening where the tactics come later in the opening and is just as worthy of a first move as e4 or f4 etc.

There are way more draws in the petroff and the ruy lopez berlin defence(berlin wall)

Than there are in the heavy scoring line

Wall of text that completely missed the (attempted?) humour.

Ok, ok, I know what you mean and i thought by keeping it informal i could allude to that enough to keep you with me.

But it seems i need to explain...

"heavy scoring line"

"crushing"

"without tactics but not boring"

....don't configure with my style of play.

They're not wrong or anything like that I'd just rather steer away from them.

I think that with d4, if white chooses, there's not much black can do to force a sharp tactical game. Its not like e4 where with the sicilian where even if white plays a closed system black can usually reach something that is sharp and open. I think feytermans suggestion of the grunfeld is probably the best try for black with this objective in mind but white can still refuse to go into the mainline with a kinda queens gambit hybrid system. Also the KID with ...Nc6 can often end up extremely tactical with each side invading on opposing flanks.
