I use this opener frequently. What are my flaws?

Does Black get to move?

Well you do have a pretty weak queenside with development.

He activated the special ability of the fairy piece Time Traveller to freeze time for black.

Or maybe black is handicapped.

I was just showing the standard moves...obviously I will adapt it to black movement but this is how it would go preferably with ideal black movement...as for weak kingside I keep those pieces in the backfield until endgame or until needed so as to have extra firepower when I get to checking phase...

1...Nf6 2...Ng8 3...Nf6 4...Ng8

It isn't very meaningful without considering black's reply. Obviously you made two early queen moves and you played Nc3. Almost every queen pawn player plays c3 or c4, but never that. As white you don't have a great grip on the centre. Black can consider e6-d5-c5. That or the pin with Bb4 might annoy you. If Bb4 and Nf6+Nd5 your pieces would all be exposed.

Against black's ideal moves, you missed a mate in four...

It really doesn't make sense to look at moves without considering your opponent's moves. Why play the bishop to f4? Why does the queen go to d3? Why castle long? Why castle at all? All of those questions can only be answered if you know what black has done.

I was just saying......not really saying it was viable I am just seeing exactly how to piece apart continuation from a certain set...make sense? Thanks for the help ig...

Just play the queens gambit... this is trash

Avatar of Dutchday

It's a very odd continuation. Apparently at no point did white or black mind that b7 was hanging. Here black has played Nc6, and really, you don't know that will happen. Positionally, white would be ok now, were it not for the oddly placed white queen and king. If white was castling queenside at all, almost certainly Qc2 and/or Bd3 would be played to avoid Bf5.

Regardless, I think the kingside is underdeveloped and white is trying to castle queenside too early.

Good rules to follow when you don't know an opening

  • put a pawn in the center
  • develop knights before bishops
  • develop the side you want to castle on first usually the king-side
  • castle
  • develop the queen usually to the second rank
  • develop/centralize the rooks
  • try to move each piece only once in the opening

Once you've done all that you can start thinking about a middlegame plan.  And if you're opponent hasn't done all those things you'll usually be better.

Your opening setup is really incomplete because you're not close to being fully developed yet.

@RobbyRaulMorphy:  That was an excellent reply!

Archmage:That's not a very good opening for reasons stated above.

Try the Ruy Lopez, or the Queen's Gambit. Both are easy openings that can be adapted to suit your style.

Avatar of Conquistador

The Ruy Lopez and the Queen's Gambit are not easy openings to play.  Black will destroy you constantly with that attitude.  Those openings require quite a bit of positional understanding to play them properly.

Avatar of helltank

I tried out a number of openings, and it was easier than, say, the Sicilian.

Avatar of chessaddictress

I heard that the King's Indian Attack is a very good opening for someone looking for a rather "universal" opening, as it is very strong for white, can transition (if desired) into several other openings, and is very adaptable to different types of defenses.  Smile

I am not exactly a major force in chess, but just looking at it ( I am assuming you are playing white, of course)

-the queen is too exposed and moved too early

-the bishop is too easily biffed by possible pawn moves

-the f1 bishop seems to be locked in

-you only made one pawn move and that pawn is not protected by another pawn

-the king side is undeveloped, maybe a fianchetto is planned next?

Amazing that Kasparov never thought of this.
