Petroff Defence Thread (one line a day)

Black need not transpose to a four knights- 3.Nc3 Bb4 is fully playable.

Nice, nice, nice! I am going to buy that book by Or Cohen! thx for the heads up, pfren. Petrosianic, that's a pretty sweet line. I'm going to add to my schedule. No problem, Martin. Satxus: sweet game. Bosboom slaughtered Reinderman.

After today I am going to tackle 5.Qe2, after that, the funky death match line, after that, the modern variation w/5.Nc4, after that, Petrosianic's line.

This all is very nice, thank you!

Verdict on the Cochrane Gambit:

It's quite good. This 5...g6! system is very interesting but also extremely risky. Black's position is to passive for my liking but I'll definitely give it a go in blitz. The first line in this Petroff Chunk was quite good and when I come back around I'll look at the main line for the Cochrane Gambit which is this:

thanks, Ponz!

The one line a day thing is really working for me. Just went back and did all of the puzzle formats without reviewing the lines first and I was surprised at the amount I remembered. Smile Would really welcome this approach with other openings in the future if your schedule allows. Grateful as ever Smile

A reversed Ruy Lopez sounds fun:

as an open lopez player, i see absolutely no reason not to take on 6 Nxe5.

@mapearson, hey that's awesome dude. I hope I can find my way in the complications of the Petroff one day. I definitely want to start two more threads. Slav Defence and 1.d4 for white.

I don't understand the point behind 3...Bb4 against 3.Nc3. One of the points of the Petroff is to have your opponent too scared to go into the main lines. 3.Nc3 is a small victory and the four knights is absolutely nothing at all to worry about.

Is this Anand-Ivanchuk exchange sacrifice idea I found theoretically important? Or is this theory completely outdated and irrelevant?

7...Qh4 is quite playable (Kramnik played it recently, so it can't be bad!), but not very appetizing due to 8.g3! Qf6 (8...Qh3 9.f3! is already close to losing) 9.Nc3! and now Black's only good option is entering a slightly worse, but defendable ending by 9...Qxd4 10.Nxe4 de4 11.Bxe4 Qxd1 12.Rxd1 0-0-0.

If you don't mind that endgame, as well as memorizing the long, forced lines after 8.c4, then 7...Qh4 is equally good to 7...Bd6, and certainly more ambitious.

Have you got a link to the Kramnik game, I can't find it in my database ?

@Shepi, that's a beautiful game. I hope Anand plays like that against Carlsen in a few weeks :D

I'll have to add that opening variation to my "to go over" list.
