Hey guys-

Just curious to know if it's possible to more-or-less force the BDG when the opponent plays the French? I haven't been able to figure out a way, but maybe I'm missing something.

well, anyway u can't prevent french on BDG if black declines with transposition :

1.d4 d5 2.e4 e6.

So i don't get your point, BDG doesnt avoid french... Same for Caro Kann.

You can't "force" anything.

First off, 1.d4 e6 is NOT the French.  It can become the French if White plays 2.e4, but 1.d4 e6 is NOT a French.

Secondly, you can't force anything out of Black.  For example, after 1.d4 e6, if you play 2.Nc3, Black can go into a Dutch (2...f5), play 2...Nf6, or play 2...d5, which after 3.e4, you are back in a French.  That said, after that line, or the normal route of 1.e4 e6 2.d4 d5 3.Nc3, there is NOTHING that forces Black to take on e4 where you follow up with f3.  3...Bb4 and 3...Nf6 are both perfectly fine moves for Black, and actually, both are probably better than 3...dxe4 which is solid, but very passive.

Another option after 1.d4 e6 is, depending on White's next move, going into the English Defense (1.d4 e6 2.c4 b6) or Owen's Defense (1.d4 e6 2.e4 b6 3.Nc3 - The difference between the English Defense and Owen's Defense is White's c-pawn - at home, it's Owen's Defense, pushed to c4 - it's an English Defense).

Long story short, NO, You can't force it!

Against the French Defense there is the Alapin Diemer Gambit and the Diemer Duhm Gambit.
