Queens gambit as white, what as black

I want to start playing the queens gambit as white, however unsure what to play as black. For players who play the queens gambit as white, what do they generally prefer to play as black? So what against 1 d4 and what against 1 e4?

What you like to play against d4 or e5 depends very much on your style. Against d4 why not play the Queens gambit yourself?

What I would recommend to play is Nimzo-Indian and the Queens-Indian defense. They are really rocksolid. You can also experiment with other Indian defenses like the King's Indian or perhaps give the Grünfeld a try? Not to forget the Dutch defense and the Benoni...

Against e4 I always like to play 1...e5. If you like the Sicilian defense then play this opening. It's a good idea to try out different openings. The French defense for example, teaches you a lot about pawn structures. When you've tried different openings it's easier to choose which one suits you best.

Good luck!

Chess is a very simple game.

The good opening moves are:

a) 1. e4

b) 1. d4

The good responses to these moves:

a) 1. ... e5

b) 1. ... d5

I play Queen's Gambit as white, Caro-kann as black against e4, I just wing it against the English, and against d4 I do the Albin countergambit.

Caro-kann I feel like is super solid and its various lines are all interesting. I feel like a lot of the time I can expect what moves my opponents will do (in the beginning) and they're often suboptimal (like they'll trade their white bishop for my white bishop in the advanced). At my level of skill for bullet games, most people will do advanced or exchange variation.

I have no idea if Albin Countergambit is any good. I don't like the slav as much as the caro kann (they have the same pawn structure, but developing the white bishop isn't as safe, I think), so I struggled trying to find a response I like, then decided oh-what-the-heck and picked the sharpest response I could find, for the lols (and the hope that I one day pull off a lasker trap).

For most casual players, the opening is the least of their worries.

Lack of situational awareness is what loses their games.

"Oh, no... my Queen!"

"Queens gambit as white, what as black"
++ Queen's Gambit as well, preferably Tarrasch Variation.

I like to play The French Defense against E4 and D5 against D4.
