ruy lopez 3...Qf6 question.

I try to play the ruy and recently i have played 4-5 opponets that play 3...Qf6. I don't see a good reason for this move. Am i missing something or is it just not the best move?

someone just did this to me and i couldn't figure it out. then he got me in a trap after 6.Nd5 (after knight trade) he went 6. Qd6 to protect the fork. Nd5 can't move from there safely, and the c7 pawn can fork. i ended up winning in an elaborate and challenging balancing act, but it was dicey for a while. Check out the game until resignation:

Thread necromancy, but I already thought about so might as well...

3...Qf6 is not the best move, 6...Qd6? was inferior to 6...Qd8.

4...Nge7 is the "main line" after which 5. Nd5 Nxd5 6. exd5 Nd4 7. Nxd4 exd4 8. O-O Be7 9. Re1 O-O 10. d3 a6 11. Bc4 b5 12. Bb3 Bb7 actually leaves Black a little better due to his more active pieces.

4...Nge7 5. O-O a6 6. Bxc6 Nxc6 7. Nd5 Qd8 8. d4 d6 9. dxe5 dxe5. Black spent a lot of time, but acheived the otherwise positionally desirable exchange of White's light squared bishop for a knight and has an equal share of the center. See for example Andreikin-Tikhomirov, Serpukov-D 2003. I am guessing that was a junior tournament, despite the famouse players.
