The most important thing is that you like the positions you get and feel comfortable and confident playing them.  That will score you many more points than a "±" evaluation in an opening book on some variation you just don't enjoy playing.

That is so true......

+ you have to know the strategy accurately to be able to get that edge

that small edge leads to a draw with perfect play

No one plays perfectly except some of the engine users.

Thats the point.

ponziani is good for quick or blitz not for long games.

i agree but it's a good practical try as i am talking about 2200> rated chess games

well you may think it's rubbish but what about others? It may be theoretically a bad option compared to the others in e4 e5 nf3 nf6 but what about those who win using it? it's all a matter of taste like sum1 said.

sum1 might like e4 e5 d4 exd4 Qxd4 Nc6 Qe3 (I don't remember the opening name) even though it's considered theoretically unsound. It's their style.

sum1 may like the four knights game even though the book says black can easily equalize.

i rarely use the ponziani as i think it is meant to be used as a surprise weapon.

so is the evans keeping them as your regular openings may be risky as your opponent might have a better idea of your style if they bother to look at your games.

if you want to discuss more about this plz send me a message

yeah but we kind of forgot an important question

collinsdanielp what's your style of play it can be one of these, a combination of them or sumthing out of the many i forgot to mention:

offensive, build-up, pawn grabber, gambiteer, oppurtunity squasher, really wild tactics.

1. Vienna - Turns out if Black makes really weak moves, this opening is highly successful (see game posted above).

2. Scotch Gambit - This is a true gambit; Black decides if he will try to keep the pawn, but usually must give it back to slow White's attack. I played this as a newbie and did well with it in the lower classes.

3. Goring Gambit - Another true gambit, and if Black is obliging me with e5 and Nc6, this is what I always play. In practice I reach middle-games where I've won the pawn back and more (one Black error and it's over, much like the King's Gambit). However, when both players are versed, it's a double-edged game.

Experiment with all openings a few times you are now concerned with gaining experience not points rating and wins will come automatically try not to get into a serious analysis of any opening until you're sure thats your 'style'

i like that equation but limiting mistakes is the big apple of it. I think improving your visualization skills is one of the good ways to limit mistakes

Thanks for all the responses so far.  I'll definitely have to test out some other opening options to see which ones work for me.  I'll probably be starting a Scotch game tournament relatively soon, I'll post the link in this thread when I do for anyone who might be interested.

manikcharan: To answer your question about my playing style I would call myself a build up player and opportunity squasher out of the options you gave.  I am definitely not a gambiteer nor a player that goes for wild tactics.  I usually try to get a material advantage, take away counterplay, and trade into a winning endgame(I'm not sure if this helps answer the question).  Sometimes this makes me a pawn grabber, but I usually am aware of my oponents attacking options and I try not to get too greedy and put myself at risk.

well then ruy is a good opening out of the many which might suite your 'style'

scotch, ok

italian not really

QGD and slav as black against d5 and e5 or sicilian pelikan

would be a good repertoire to start out with

P.S: just a suggestion

Thanks.  I am a Sicilian player, French Sicilian and Kan.  I want to learn the Slav since I have yet to find a response to d4 that I really like.  I might end up back with the Ruy after trying out a few other options.  Thanks for all your suggestions.

a great response to d4 for black is c5!

I'm in a Benoni tournament right now.

The scotch is very good and much under-rated in my opinion.

We have a scotch fans group if anyone wants to join :)

Why not Nimzo-Larsen 1.b3, for example, very decent move that changes almost everything ?Laughing
