Wow, that is a great pick! This is a trap in the Chigorin Defence that people fall for just about all the time - it just doesn't always get punished. This is a hidden goldmine!

To add to post #72, I should add that an astonishing 44 titled Masters in history have played 4..Bg4 to which White played 5. d5. White went on to win in 40 of the 44 games. Also, at any level of play, 3..dxc4 and most notably 4..Bg4 seem to be the most played moves, or a slight secondary line to the recommended move 4..Nf6. Also at any time control. Why is this not a thing that people who study and play the Chigorin seem to know about??

Isn't c7# just mate though? betetr than cxb7

Not when Black makes an escape route, but at this point they're likely to just resign.

dude, about the  schlecter trap, the queen can just take the knight.

Then Ba5 traps the queen. Forgot to mention that lol.

Oh, I saw Ba5, but I didn't think it would trap her becase i was too lazy to look/.

Noah's arc trap. What happens is, after Nf6, the best move here is O_O, defending it indirectly, because if Nxe4, then Re1, and black's king is not very safe. But after Be7, then Nxe4 is a bit stronger threat. d4, striking back at the center, is a mistake, which loses a pawn, after exd4. If Nxd4?? Nxd4 Qxd4!?, black can play c4, and no matter where the queen moves, black will play c5, trapping the light-squared bishop. The best move is actually Qe5+, where you only lose 2 pawns after Qe7, Qxe7, Bxe7, and white plays c4, stopping black from playing c4, but black can play Nxe5!.

After 9. Qe5+ the position is actually equal material-wise. Also you should not bet against me sacking my bishop anyway to activate all my pieces much sooner.

Well, actually, when you check, you will lose the e-pawn. But I forgot that the material is equal. And a bishop is still a piece.

The only reason you would be ahead in development is that u have less pieces to develop. And even if you end up equal, black is till slightly better by gaining so many tempos.

CAn you guys show me what you're doing?

Sameer_chess-player

um i showed a ruy lopez trap where black has a significantly better(not winning) position wih perfect play from white

chamo2074

Oh you mean that I thought you were still arguing about the Ba4 thing where you trap the queen

Sameer_chess-player

2nd ruy lopez trap

unless you're a berlin master like Magnus carlsen, it's recommended to play the main line in the ruy lopez. If you play Nf6 then white castles, and then you play a6, Bxc6 does win a pawn, because after dxc6 Nxe5, there are no more forks. If you fork the knight and the g-pawn, well, that pawn's defended. And if you fork the knight and the e-pawn, after Nf3 Qxe4, re1 pins and wins the queen.

chamo2074

Unless you are Magnus Carlsen you're not recommended to play the RuyL at all
