If you are a positional player, Semi-Slav is the way to go. If you like agression and/or tactical opportunities, play the Benko Gambit. I personally play the Semi-Slav cause I'm too frightened to play a tactical/aggresive game. I like calm, simple chess. :)

1. d4 g5 nothing's even close; you want sharp, this is it; play it if yer not chicken.

wiselady

This is sharp:

1. d4 d5 2. c4 e6 3. Nc3 c5 4. cxd5 cxd4 5. Qxd4 Nc6 6. Qd1 exd5 7. Qxd5 Bd7

The Tarrasch - Von Henning Gambit.

Who was Tarrasch

who was von henning ?

are they famous and do they have their own museums ?

I am sure they are in wikipedia because of some sponsor who gave them gold coins.  there are millions of chess players in the world.  but it seems that it is all about who you know or who you blow but not what you know when it comes to being remembered in the chess world.

AKAL1

How on Earth is that a bust?

bangalore2

That's taken from Larsen-Tal, think. I think Tal sacced the c7 pawn. Anyway...how does he get the LSB?

AKAL1

I actually play the Mar del Plata with fairly good results

Trapper4

Maybe what rdecredico is trying to say is black wont be able to push g4 anytime soon? but I still dont know how white will trade his knight for black's light squared bishop

try the gruenfeld , it gets very intresting after you try gambit your c pawn

That only happens in that one Bf4 line...and even then no one takes on c7...

wiselady

bayonent makes oeople scared to play kid

but naka stills plays it. does that mean he has courage or is foolish? fischer probably did not play bayonet because he was scared of tje bayonet

netzach

Silly topic.

If looking for "sharp" against d4 then benoni or budapest is best attempt. The opening however is not suited to that and knowledgeable opponents will defeat you.

d4 is positional/tactical.

Sam Shankland knows how to get it done.  Good road map here.

White may well be better and all, but I definitely don't want to be White in a Mar Del Plata regardless..

netzach

Radjabov & Nakamura not faring so well recently?

netzach

Yeah.

What is interesting in current GM play is that if white wants "sharp" they frequently play 1.e4 now?

Almost to the extent that 1.d4 shows partial lack of confidence or constrained-thinking.

No doubt, the dark squared defenses to d4 have been chased from the battlefield at the highest levels.

Huh?  The KID and Grunfeld are still alive and well...not all top GM's are pansies!

The Grunfeld is not a dark-squared defense.

The KID has been chased from the Battlefield.  Has not been seen at WC levels since Kasparov, and won't be.

How is the grunfeld NOT a dark squared defense?  The entire opening relies on dark square control.  And top level doesn't only mean WC matches, the KID is still played by super GM's.

And BTW, your "busts" to the KID are based on old moves.  You sound like Fischer on the KG hahaha

I've been dying to ask a King's Indian maven:

What 1 e4 defense goes with it?

Probably the Najdorf since Kasparov, Fischer and Judit Polgar played both as black.

and the funny thing is Bobby fischer like never really played d4 much lol yet his main go to line against 1. d4 was the KID for along while i find it strange that he would avoid d4 lol afraid to face the KID? lol thats what I think but than thats my bias becuase i like that line

While the KID can't be refuted Petrosian said he feeds his family off KID players.  It can be really hard to play even for top flight competition.  At class level many don't know what to do outside of book or think they're in book yet subtleties make their plan as if they were in book not viable.

Mainline_Novelty

The Closed Ruy often leads to KID-esque structures.
