Sicilian: Kan Variation

Sicilian Opening is a maze for me. Today I learned something new about kan variation.

5.Bd3 is first idea, to hold e4 with bishop and delay to develop the knight at b1 so white can play c4 later.7.Qe2 is also very important, after this move, white is ready to play e5. If 7. ..Nc6, then 8. Nxc6 bxc6 9.e5 Nd5 10.c4 Nb4 11.Rd1,as black develops very slow, it is clear that white is better.

However, I don't have any experience to go deeper. After 7. ..d6 8.c4 Be7 9.Nc3,what should white do next?

Doesn't it depend on what black does? Is that what databases are for?

The Kan is my main weapon, and Bd3 is the only variation that bothers me.

I used to play the kan all the time and yes Bd3 was the hardest to play against
