Sicilian Pros and Cons?
In a perfect world for white, where black did nothing worthwhile, white's dream after 1.e4 would be to play 2.d4, with complete control of the center.
Black, in playing the Sicilian, plays 1...c5, which gives him temporary control of d4, making uncontested domination of the center by white impossible.
Eventually, white is going to feel like he has enough forces built up that he can go ahead and push d4 forward anyway. When he does, black is going to capture with c5, and in the resulting structure, white will have very active pieces and probably first shot at an attack. Black will have a central pawn majority and a half open c-file to work with. Black will likely have to defend for a while against a withering white attack. But if he succeeds, he hopes his advantages will prove superior later in the game.
