I first encountered the Sicilian, Smith-Morra Gambit in 1970, I have played it both as White and as Black and have co-written a few books on it with Ken Smith. It seems the most popular variation is when the pieces are developed like a Scheveningen variation. Here is a typical game with this type of setup that was popular in the 1960s and early 1970s. At the time, there was a lot of analysis on this variation published in Schahmatny Bulletin. Ken Smith also published a few booklets on it. In this game, the first 16 moves and analysis appeared in the June 1971 issue of Schahmatny Bulletin in an article written by E. Gik and S. Rosenberg. The Russians called the opening the Central Sicilian Gambit. The authors did not consider White's 17th move, which seems to draw. 17.e5 might be stronger.
