Hi, I wouldnt recomment playing f5 against 1.e4. The pyramid of c6,d5,e6 is a strong set up in general. Having the f pawn advanced is a preventative measure against e4, the d5 pawn is a blockader and supports control of the e4 square. You will have a locked in light square bishop and need to pay attention to your dark squares. Other than that it is move order which will be important. You can also reach the stonewall from a Slav position. I believe 1.c4 1.d4, 1.g3 1.Nf3 and 1.b3 it will be possible to play the dutch not always the stonewall. Note there is a nasty gambit in 1.nf3 f5 games.
Stonewall Dutch against everything

The dutch is fine, it's not the best but it's doable against most white openings that are not 1.e4. You won't be getting an advantage but chances are your opponent won't have much prep on it either. However with the stonewall dutch you are weakening your king's diagonal and the e5 square
#1
You can play Stonewall Dutch against 1 d4, 1 c4, 1 Nf3, 1 g3, 1 b3...
Only against 1 e4 you cannot play it.
You can also play it in reverse with white.

The answer is no!
Against 1.e4, 1.g4, 1.f4 (1...f5? 2.e4!), and 1.Nc3, the Dutch is no good.
If you play the Stonewall, you need to be willing to also play the Classical and fianchetto. In fact, the Stonewall should be a last resort.
1.d4 f5 2.c4 (2.Bf4 Nf6 3.Nf3 e6 4.e3 would be one case where 4...d5 is TERRIBLE, 4...b6 here) Nf6 3.Nc3 e6 4.Nf3 and now 4...Bb4! While 4...d5 fails to 5.Bf4. 6.e3, and 7.Bd3.
The rules are simple:
1. Black must start with f5, Nf6, and e6 to stabilize e4 and d5.
2. If Black can safely play 4...b6, he should. The Bishop, otherwise, bites on granite. From b7, it controls d5 and e4.
3. The Stonewall is UNPLAYABLE if White can still play both Bf4 AND Bd3
4. Do not trade on f4 unless it damages White's pawns and do not let Black trade on d6 without going through the contortions of b3, Bb2, Qc1, Ba3.
1.d4 f5 2.c4 Nf6 3.g3 e6 4.Bg2 d5 5.Nf3 Bd6 6.O-O c6 and now if 7.Bf4, then 7...Bxf4! (Wrecks the pawns)
1.d4 f5 2.c4 Nf6 3.g3 e6 4.Bg2 d5 5.Nh3 Bd6 and now if 6.Bf4, then 6...Be7! (6...Bxf4? 7.Nxf4 with a huge advantage).
Idea is knight and Bishop cannot occupy f4 simultaneously.
I had Black in the following game this past Saturday.
This was 2 weeks before that, Notice no Stonewall!
Hello again! Im doing my prep for the tournament this weekend and Im wondering if I can play the stonewall variation against everything? I mean not only for g3, but for white setups that are without the Fianchetto on the king's side. Thanks in advance!
