What do you caro-kann players play against the Fantasy Variation? That's what I play against the Caro-Kann

The fantasy is an excellent choice against almost all opponents. One of my best mates plays it and we’ve played hundreds of games against each other online and otb over the last five years or so. I’ve tried all sorts against it, and while my favourite no longer works against him, it works against most opponents!

don’t want to spoil the fun, but that’s the start.

One of the most beautiful games I have ever seen features the Fantasy variation. It is a wonderful mess of a game, probably the most original game Chuky ever played.

Black does not have much to fear in the fantasy, but he has to find a line which fits him well. Some of the computer approved lines in the Fantasy are pure chaos, and usually a Caro player isn't interested entering something like that.

Against 3...e5 and then 4...Qb6 or 4...Bc5, I usually play 4.Nc3 and then 5.Na4 and I'm surprisingly fine, though it's a very goofy position:

If 6...Bf2+, then 7.Ke2 and Black has to trade queens, and I'm just up a pawn, though my pawn structure and king? Not the best but with correct play I can solidify.

Yeah that’s the best continuation, but it’s very playable for black. And you get the surprise factor that barely anyone has prepped it (present company evidently excluded).

As you say, goofy position

I’m surprised by how many players still play that stupid Caro Kann. You don’t learn chess that way. Why choose to be passive voluntarily? It’s an embarrassment. The only real threat to White is the Sicilian!

I play the Caro-Kann because it's the opening I win the most with when playing black, and for me that's all that matters

This game was basically a long effort by Ivanchuk to untangle his position. Just by how Jobava played this, sacrificing material for a positional advantage, it is a clue that many caro players do enjoy wild, varied, and chaotic positions.

100%. It has that reputation for being boring, but only if both players want it to be. Actually, it’s a really good opening for springboarding interesting positions through pawn breaks etc. never for the life of me understood the CK hate.

I don't get it either, its only boring if you play the exchanged variation or something like this:

I play d4 so Caro Kann isn’t something I’m too experienced with, even when I played e4 nobody really played it.

It like actually almost never happens, up until i hit 1700 i played a risky gambit against it and people fell for the trap A LOT, here it is in case someone at lower elo wants to try it

I looked at all you games in the Caro Kann, as black and white, as said all along, not just as black, as you initially said you liked playing against it and that it was a key component to your current rating. I looked at all you Caro Kann games against 1900+ players because it's relevant not arbitrary given you are around 2100 rapid. I looked at it in two parts, one of the parts looks to have been unrated, so just checked, double checked, triple checked, and you have definitely played 208 games, Rapid, Caro Cann, any colour, 1900+, and you have a losing record, both in win % and in points. Last 3 months is obviously too small a sample size. Long term or short term, it's not been beneficial for you to play against and with the Caro Kann.

Why have you been looking at my games as white? I have clearly been talking about it as a black opening for the entirety of the discussion. When I wrote my initial comment it was very obviously from the black perspective, no??

Anyway, I’m largely done with this conversation - you consistently cherry pick stats and don’t answer my questions. Again, you’re yet to answer the direct question I’ve asked multiple times now: how do you explain my rating increase if I perform poorly in my black repertoire?

That said, I do enjoy playing against the Caro-Kann a lot of the time. And my winrate is a comfortable 51% over >500 games according to my chessmonitor stat page 👍

playing against the Caro Kann? Play the Fantasy Variation, or the Tal Variation, or some offbeat and aggressive yet not bad variation that will throw them off. That's my philosophy with every opening in chess.

Whom do I trust regarding the CK. GM's or a 700 bullet player. I'll trust the GM's that play the CK.

Transpose to the Gurgenidze, which Bezgodov does not cover Black's best response.

1.e4 c6 2.d4 d5 3.f3 g6 4.Nc3 Bg7 5.Be3 (A direct transposition to 1.e4 g6 2.d4 Bg7 3.Nc3 c6 4.Be3 d5 5.f3) 5...Qb6 6.Qd2 Qxb2 7.Rb1 Qa3 8.h4 h5 9.Nh3 and he mentions 9...e6, 9...Nh6, 9...dxe4, 9...Nf6, 9...Bxh3, and 9...Qd6. Best? 9...Nd7!
