What do you think are the best openings for beginners and intermediate ?

My personal opinion is that beginners shouldn't worry about learning opening theory. At most levels of chess. including both yours and mine, nearly all games are decided by tactics. If you want to play a good opening at the beginner level, the most important thing you can do is follow the opening principles of controlling the center, developing pieces, and castling, while also keeping in mind general rules of thumb such as not making multiple moves with the same piece in the opening, not developing your queen too early, etc.

TL;DR: You don't really need openings at the beginner level. Focus on solid play.

...But if I had to give my personal recommendations, I'd say London as White and Caro-Kann against e4 as Black. Both of those are pretty solid openings.

The real blankie has given a very very good answer. And an extra problem for me who is 75, is that I cant' learn and remember all those different openings. So, let's play and enjoy,

The other phase to study up on is basic endgames. Start with Queen v King then Rook v King then get into Q+N v K endings etc. learn how to push pawns and when. Doing this will give you a decent advantage over a lot of beginners because learning endgames is boring to them. This means more wins from what might look like a draw and more draws from losing positions. Eventually, you can learn some of the more advanced endings but at a beginner level, learning endings involving 5 or less pieces will be a big plus.
