I usually go with the Mesmerino. Especially against Korchnoi.

The (almost) unsound Damiano Defense leads to a noticeable advnatage for White after 3. Nxe5!, which either wins material or leads to a nice opening advantage.

Shucks, Pfren already gave the best answer.

I don't know the Damino Defense, but the Domino's Gambit is ordering pizza, having it dropped off at the tournament table where you're playing an opponent 400 points higher than yourself, and proceeding to drip sauce, sausage and pepperoni all over his nice, clean board.

The Domino's Gambit is effective at leveling the playing field, but you may be taking your life in your hands.

If I remember correctly, Sloan wagered that no one under USCF 2200 would know -- or find -- the crtitical move in this line. I believe all other moves lead to equality or a slightly better position for black if allowed to play Bd6.

Well... apparently he was wrong.

Notice how his opponent kindly blundered two of his four(!) extra pawns, yet this wasn't enough. Notice also that true to his warrior spirit, Sloan did not resign until he was to be mated in two moves...

Sloan is famous for underestimating everyone not named Sloan.

why do openings have such stupid names?

Avatar of AutisticCath

The opening is named after a Portuguese chess player named Pedro Damiano who condemned it as weak.

That he does.  The man is one weird duck, and I refuse to buy any of his Ishi Press reprints.  Are the original books in the public domain, I wonder?  They are operating out of Japan so I'm not so sure.  I am sure of one thing, the man is an embarasment to the Libertarian Party.

And it is.  2...f6 goes against every principle in chess ... so I imagine Nakamura will try it out in Blitz sometime.

i dont care about how it was named i just wanna know why the other names are odd.

Avatar of AutisticCath

The Sicilian defense was named because it looked kind of like a pizza at first. Tasted that way too.

How are they "odd"?
