Hello,

If you play this "defense" in Blitz games, chances are you'll have a lot of successes, especially if you know the lines and your opponent wants to punish you for daring to play such moves against him. Often, chess is about ego..., not elo !

Actually, the "serious" players could play it as it is real chess. I mean the "serious player" is mainly reciting openings and variations and most of the time, you gotta wait the 2Oth move to really start playing. The advantage of the Fred is you start playing as of the very first move.

I personally call 1.e4 f5 2. exf5 Kf7 the "drunk man defense". I like chess engine games and I have built up a database dealing with that opening. The games are surprisingly very long when Hiarcs or Deep Shredder, for instance, are confronting each other. This is why I think the "serious players" (id over 2800 ELO) could give it a try. Here's a most recent exemple. Deep Rybka 4 (White side) is defeated :

As you can see, the "serious player" can play up to 81 moves and defeat the white. Be it deep rybka. But you gotta be a serious player !!!

I have more games to post, of course with more white victories. As this one :

They certainly must have done so, indeed !

i wanted to play Dutch defense after i watched it on youtube, then realized i was in the wrong position for it a bit to late.. (i was new to dutch) So i tried to play the best i could without knowing the game type.
It turned out to be Fred's opening (who ??)

Here is the game i hope you enjoy it, and sure blunders caused me to win this game, but i have to say also sometimes an atack works, because surprise is part of the attack too. what surpriced me most, was that it didnt seam to be such a bad opening afterall, in this variation.

PeterArt

if so can you tell me if i played it good or wrong, i think the knight under the pawn, was a good thing (makes queen attack useless) also offering the next pawn to release queen seamed to be good. So far i have not spotted real 'big' weaknesses in it

This is a very strange defense for me. What's the highest level it's used in?

I think I have found a winning line for White, 1.e4 f5 2. Qh5+ g6 3. Qf3 Nf6 4.exf5 gxf5 5.Qxf5 d5 6. Qf4. At least, I think it's good...

PeterArt

i find this a real cool defense but with little information about it, anyon reccomends some pdf or website about it, i need a bit more then just to see one youtube winning line (but great examples so far in this blog)

mine wasn't from youtube

Here are my comments on your opening moves.

1.e4 f5 2.exf5 Nf6 (I do prefer 2...Kf7 in general -- I feel that it is the main point of the opening for Black.  However objectively 2...Nf6 is obviously better.  ) 3.Nf3! (3.d4! d5 4.Bd3 is considered best) 3...e6!? is a fantastic idea.  (Most people would play 3...d5 and try to go for 3...Bxf5) After 4.fxe6 dxe6 Black will play Bd6 and castle (as you did.)  I was skeptical when I saw that you played 8...Qf7 but I can't argue with the result.  I might give this line a shot if I'm playing against someone who's closer to me in rating, and 2...Kf7 isn't an option.

The Rxe2+ "diversion" sac to pull the King in the pin on his Queen by a 1200 player tends to make me ask if a computer is making suggestions.  Just an observation.

i know what you mean. but my rating is low cause i don't play on here. and that sac was easy to spot

wow... this opening is terrible...

It would have to improve dramatically to be only terrible . . . it's instant disaster.  Anyone who would play it should probably be placed on suicide watch.

If stupid were chocolate, this opening would be a Godiva boutique.

We only see this defense when someone goes off their medications against medical advice.

This comment is so funny that I would love to see it quoted in an upcoming book on the Fred.

There may be some psychological point to this idea, 1e4 f5!? I just checked the stats in this sites Game Explorer. Amazingly, only two players replied 2.exf5! ( they both won). Most tried 2.d4, with an overall losing score. A lot also tried 2.Nf3!? This actually looks kind of interesting after:

A couple of comments:

  • 2.Nf3 transposes to the Lisitin Gambit, which I agree is interesting.
  • 3.Ng5 is more common, for example 3...Nf6 4.d3 with compensation.
  • If you're going to play 5.Be2 then why not 4.Be2 right away?
  • In your final position after 6...g6 7.Nxg6 hxg6 8.Bxg6+ Kd7 followed by ...Rg8 looks better for Black.

Here's a variation known as the "Mao Tse Tung Gambit" in Russia.  (Because Black's King makes a Long March to h8.)  Also of interest:  in this game Black delivers mate by moving his King sideways.

I see there are many openings I don't know. I wonder how I managed to surpass 1800 at last.

But why don't you start a thematic tournament with this Fred which I wouldn't even chose after having drank a bottle of Jim Beam
