Thanks for the insight into the Grunfeld! You seem like a very well practiced Grunfeld player. I think I will switch to this opening. It looks pretty exciting.

The Semi-Slav looks interesting.
I am most certainly a sub-2000 level player. I just registered with the USCF and my first tournament is on the 7th. I assume that my strength is between 1300-1500. I'm going to look more closely at the opening and maybe try it out during the tournament.

When my opponent plays 1.d4 I usually play the King's Indian Defence, but I hate the closed positions I get. I don't do good in closed positions, or where I don't have very much space to maneuver. I was reading that the Grunfeld can give some open positions for Black. Is the Grunfeld hard to play? What are some basic ideas/ strategy to keep in mind? Does anyone else play this opening?
