I mean you are 2200 so you should know how to analyze openings and use common resources, such as the database, to find new lines. It's a bit strange to see a beginner level question being posed here from a strong player such as yourself.

A quick look at the database shows 7...Nge7! as best, which prepares d5. 7...d5, as played in the game given, gives white a +2 advantage. I have a book from 2005 that recommends 7...Nge7. I'm not sure why you are lacking in opening knowledge on one of the sounder gambits white can play in the italian - you either must not be a 1...e5 player, in which case I'm not sure why you're playing e5, or you just don't study openings, which is fair, but then again, you're playing 1...e5, which does demand theoretical study when you get better.

Also, I don't know what you mean by "got lower ratings".

@russell1013 re #21 You're going to face this sort of thing, I'm afraid. I have been rattling around the chess world since 1983 and thought I had seen it all, but someone graded as high as you who's got there "unevenly" without having the sort of taught "base" which includes this sort of opening preparation technique knowledge is a new one even for me. People are more used to this sort of questioning by people graded 1300 or below. But the good guys on here will still take you seriously. You are clearly a very good chessplayer indeed (better than I ever was). If you get tired of people not understanding that you have reached your level with this sort of gap, maybe it might be time to seek out a professional coach...?
