oh, I think instead of Nf6, you should play Nd7 to stop this Ne5-Bc4 plan. I used to play Nf6 and Nd7 without a particular order, but it does matter. I got beat to a pulp by @wild_cat99 with this Ne5 stuff for a long time, until I noticed that little nuance made all the difference.

actually that's a good trick I might try it from white's side sometime

Yeah, was just gonna say Nd7 looks like main line, not allowing Ne5 in the first place, and not allowing Ng6# of course

sid0049

yup, 7. Nd7

i think the line allowing ne5 has been rehabilitated (maybe be7 instead of nbd7 could hold but still tricky to play as black) but maybe not much practical sense to have to learn it as black, just going nd7 is good enough.

Can't say much.  When I played the Caro, it was always 4...Nd7, not 4...Bf5, that I played, and as White I have dabbed with the Advance but otherwise have always played the Fantasy, not the classical.

Laskersnephew

It seems the 10...Nbd2 is just a fatal mistake! 10...Nd5 seems to be just fine for Black

My friend tells me the French is outright refuted

bruh obviously not true

chamo2074

The winawer is one of the most popular lines, it cant be refuted simply cant

chamo2074

Idk I haven't studied it the reason being that Ginger GM doesn't recommend it cz IT HAS A LOT OF THEORY. I DON'T THINK IT IS REFUTED THEN

The Caro-kann is just fine. There are some Nxf7 tricks that you have to know, but every opening has its tactical traps. The number of inexperienced French players who fell for the Greek gift is enormous
