Ruy Lopez (1530-1580) was a Spanish priest and one of the first European theoreticians of the game of chess. Since he researched the opening line 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5 quite thoroughly, it bears his name to this day, although in some countries it is referred to as the Spanish Opening, also in tribute to him.
He was not royal, although his opening is sometimes called the queen of chess openings.
