The Santa Claus Opening

Hey OP I feel like we're pretty similar, I always contemplated about the viability of 1.e4 with 2.b3. It gains central control and prepares for kingside aggression with the Qbishop.

And we have the same rating as well! Aha hahaha. I'll look into this santa claus opening more. I tried something similar with an English opening with a Qbishop fianchetto, but the structure turned out to be too loose.

Keep us informed man.

Well one of the toughest lines which seems to be engine recommended seems to be the line with 2...Nf6.

It seems to be the only line where an engine believes black has a slight advantage.

However, I have yet to see anyone play it the same way an engine plays it.

I have seen some players play 2...Nf6.

The position's which result after usually are not the same as an engine.

In many cases white and black get an equal position out of the opening with chances for both sides.

Thus, if a person wants a position which is equal or playable.

This line I think is perfectly acceptable.

If a person instead wants a more demanding line well than they can always play some of the more critical lines in chess.

Obviously, The move 2.b3 does not pressure black as fast as 2.Nf3 for example.

Yeah its a sad situation.

Yeah after 3...Bc5.

I have trouble coming up with a 4th move which I like.

The normal move would be 4.Bb2

However, it seems like black can get a small edge.

Engines like the move 4.Nf3.

However, I think the move 4.Nf3 is even more terrifying.

In that position black can play the move d5.

However, the move which terrify's me is Ng4.

It is not even the best move and I'm scared.

Sometimes in the Italian Game people do this type of move as white.

They try to go for the Famous Fried Liver Attack.

Which goes back to why I am in terror.

The Fried Liver Attack is with the White pieces.

I call this line the Fried Chicken Attack.

Since after all it is with the black pieces and I'm to chicken to face it!

You know I never played 1...e5 when I was a beginner.

I avoided playing 1...e5 on the black side because I didn't want to deal with this sort of nonsense.

I was a Sicilian Dragon player.

I wasn't going to be pushed around.

My dark bishop was a Dragon.

Yeah you know black is going to play Ng4 here.

The black pieces have been suppressed by the man for hundreds of years having to deal with the Fried Liver Attack.

Now is there chance to do it against white!

You know what they are going to do.

Even the engine knows what black is going to do and it doesn't even have a brain.

I'm not playing 4.Nf3.

I refuse to do it.

I don't care what the engine says.

I don't care if 4.Nf3 is the best move.

Yep

I have made up my mind.

I'm playing 4.Bb2.

No, Ng4 Fried Chicken Attack nonsense vs me buddy!

They are not getting that satisfaction against me.

Even if black loses against 4.Nf3 they will still feel happy.

They will tell there friends and family members that they did the Fried Liver Attack as black against you.

Have you ever seen these Fried Liver Attack players?

I swear the majority of them look like Hill Billy's with speech problems.

They will do the Fried Liver Attack against you and you might completely crush them in every way.

Yet at the end of the game they will be celebrating.

You completely crushed them and they lost, yet they are celebrating.

Than you hear them talking about it to there Hill Billy parents.

Son responses: I did the Fried Liver Attack like you showed me daddy!

Father responses: Good Job son you sure showed him! Lets  go celebrate with a family meal!

This never happened to me.

This happened to my friend. He told me the story.

Yeah some things go beyond winning or losing a chess game.

We are talking about chess reputation here.

When my opponents face me and lose.

They should feel like losers!

They should feel sad.

They should not start giving people high 5's and celebrating.

Something has gone terribly wrong if they start giving out high 5's and celebrating!

I'm just putting it out there.

You can not say I didn't warn you!

Haha I like your very interesting post. You're a storyteller!

I agree, going straight into b3 allows black to grab the initiative with Nf6, which good players over 1800 will play imo.

So I was thinking, what about 1. e4 e5, 2. Nf3 Nc6, and THEN 3. b3?

Avatar of finn416

But that's not the Santa Opening.  It sort of transposes into the Sleigh Defense, though.

Man, this is so fun to play, I can't get over it. Problem is, e4 e5 b3 isn't in the challenge database.

Well, as a novice to the site, one doubt?  What does it need to reach the databases?

Good point, I don't know

What is the proper response to the Grinch Defense?

I don't know, you probably will want to experiment and see what you like.

Umm... what? Your comment makes no sense. Look at the red words. And besides, I'm no novice, I've already recieved my anniversary trophy.

Oh, sorry, I see you were talking about yourself. Just saw your profile.

Avatar of Dalek

Yes, I was talking about myself.  I wonder what it is needed to a new overture to enter the databases and get a classification... Sorry if I was not clear.

Avatar of finn416

Ohh... OK that makes sense now.

Shouldn't we come up with a grinch defense mainline as a group?

Also, I just played as white with the moves 1. e4 e5 2.b3 d5. Does this line have a name, or is it yet unnamed? If unnamed, I propose the Christmas Stocking variation.
Avatar of finn416

We already have a group for the opening--here.

Avatar of LeBellman
How do I join the group?

Your stockings or your wife's? I'm sorry to have to tell you that your wife's grave has been recently desecrated.  Just kidding. Anyways, it's a bad move, in my humble opinion.

Very Excellent!

Actually I do not think anyone has came up with a name for the line with 2...d5

I will def have to check to make sure.

I'll get back to you.

If no one has made a name as of yet we can use the Christmas Stocking Variation as the name.
