Berlin against d4?

Nobody says anything about a strong player. But, how not to be furious when you see that the top player on chess.com:

- claimed defeating Bent Larsen OTB and forgot the year or how to spell the name of his opponent.

- claimed an ELO over 2500 which he thought it expired

- had an establish TT rating of 1600

- posts absolutely infantile comments/advices in the forums

- lied about absolutely ANY aspect he could lie (MIT alum, PhD)

- plays far far better than ANY human player in the history, OTB or correspondence.

@ Krish30

You changed "strong" to "weak"--not sure of your ultimate point.

When called a moron, hostility might ensue?

Didn't he say that he meets the engine-enhanced cheaters here and holds his own? Marvellous!

He also does this, as he claimed, while taking no more than 10 minutes for 95% of his moves!!

Clearly, 'chita is even more special than you say.

Please, let's keep it civil.

I understand your feelings and I thik everyone can make his own opinion. No need to hijack the thread nor engage into a flame-war.

He can't be bad at chess - look at his rating. Maybe he finds it difficult to explain his ideas to others because what seems so simple to him isn't so simple for us?

maybe. I mean he didn't exactly say that the Englund was good, just interesting.

@ hicetnunc: Surely it's far more entertaining than queen pawn openings?

Might be time to bail and start a different thread.  I mean, when the Tet Offensive, becomes part of a discussion on 1. d4 you've got to wonder.

My summation of what has gone on here, in a chessic sense?

Some people will never like 1. d4 ....  In attempting to take White out of his comfort zone with a sharp, perhaps wild, defense Black must compromise or accept lines generally known to be inferior as all Main Line defenses to 1.  d4 can generally be steered into more sedate waters.

There are many good defenses to 1. d4 that do not meet the above criteria, Nimzo, QID, QGA, Slav, Semi Slav.

There are many defenses that limit White's options but are more difficult to play/operate under a cloud:  Alapin, Benoni, Benko, Budapest, Dutch ....

There are some openings that limit White, might be fun to play on occasion but are probably just bad: Englund.

These all assume White wants to stay conventional himself and isn't looking at dumping into his favorite sideline:  Baltic, Colle, Tromp, Catalan, etc.

SO can we get back to chess or just put this thread to rest and move on to something else?

sorry to prolong this thread but what is the Alapin defence against white?

Avatar of CarlMI

The Alapin Countergambit would be:
1.d4 d5 2. c4 e5

Like all countergambits it can be a rollicking affair.

I don't mind prolonging as long as we discuss chess on its merits.

STOP IT! STOP IT! STOP IT RIGHT NOW! STOP IT! All right, no one is to stone anyone until I blow this whistle. Even... and I want to make this absolutely clear... even if they do say, "ouachita. "

 That's _Albin's_ Countergambit, not Alapin's.

No wonder I had never heard of Alapin's gambit. 5am!? woah, the best I've ever done is 2am.

Well I get to work at 5am, nice and quiet, no one bugging me.  Amazing the work I can get done.  At 2 am I'm wondering where my oldest kid is at, but he's 21 so he gets a great deal of freedom.
