The Svehnikov/Kalahnikov/Lowenthal Combo Seems Impossible to Beat

Hmm. My dear titan, I am afraid that I cannot answer your question. I'm not that great with openings but tomorrow when I am not tired I promise to check things out from my chess books and databases :)
Have you tried the obvious; playing these systems against higher rated players to see what happens? Swap sides and see how things look from the other side of the board.

Well, the problem is not in the opening, as you said you SHOULD be getting the advantage, but you can't use it.
Why not pick up a book on positional chess and see if that helps?
In regards to the Sveshnikov at club level, i believe its a great weapon, i was undefeated in sicilian games OTB, back when i used it as my reply to 1.e4. Often black gets the same pawn structure so he is very familiar with plans and typical themes. That said there aremany different lines to learn, i suggest you pick one pet line and use it (without much study) and then focus on your positional game, over time it will become easier.
As a club player, and not a master of positional chess, I am not sure how to deal with these positions on the White side. From a practical point Black will fling pawns on the queenside and if that doesn't work he will play f5 and try to fling pieces on the kingside. All the while White is supposed to try and control d5, maybe go after Black's queenside pawns and get some positional advantage. But how realistic is this for the average player?
These aren't like other positions in the sicilian where you can castle queenside and calculate your way to mate so to speak. These positions seem to require technique that I frankly don't have. To be in positions where your opponent has tactical chances and you have no idea what's going on is never good. And I would even surmise that Black doesn't even need to be aware of these things to get out of the opening. As long as Nxb5 traps are avoided and he doesn't end up in some bad bishop endgame things should be at least ok.
In Kalashnikov you don't even get the d5 square. You end up with a pawn there and have some kind of advantage from this but I'm not sure what it is. What I do know is that Black needs to hack at White's king before bad things spontaneously occur in the position.
In the Lowenthal I swap queens to avoid theory and play the endgame. This isn't as troublesome as at least I get the bishop pair. But I'm not exactly playing like Karpov either.
So I'm really at a loss as to how I'm supposed to deal with these positions in a practical way (attacking and stuff).
